Hyeonjong of Goryeo

Definition
Hyeonjong (현종, 顯宗) was the 8th ruler of the Goryeo Dynasty, which ruled the Korean Peninsula from 918 to 1392 CE.

Overview
Hyeonjong reigned from 1009 to 1031 CE. He ascended the throne following a military coup led by General Kang Cho, who overthrew King Mokjong. Hyeonjong's reign is notable for consolidating royal authority after a period of political instability and for overseeing significant military and diplomatic responses to external threats, particularly from the Khitan-led Liao Dynasty (also known as the Khitan Empire). His reign coincided with two major invasions by the Liao Dynasty in 1010 and 1018, which were ultimately repelled by Goryeo forces under the command of General Gang Gam-chan, most notably at the Battle of Kwiju (1019).

Despite the challenges posed by these invasions, Hyeonjong implemented policies that strengthened the central government and promoted Buddhism, which was a central element of state ideology during the Goryeo period. He also sponsored the carving of the Tripitaka Koreana, an extensive collection of Buddhist scriptures, though the original woodblocks from his era were later destroyed during Mongol invasions.

Etymology/Origin
The name "Hyeonjong" (顯宗) is a posthumous temple name conferred after his death, following East Asian tradition. "Hyeon" (顯) means "illustrious" or "resplendent," and "jong" (宗) means "ancestor" or "progenitor," commonly used in temple names for rulers in Korea, China, and Vietnam.

Characteristics
Key aspects of Hyeonjong’s reign include:

  • Restoration of stability after a coup d'état ended the reign of Mokjong.
  • Strengthening of the monarchy against powerful aristocratic and military figures.
  • Military resistance against Khitan invasions, which affirmed Goryeo's sovereignty.
  • Promotion of Buddhism as a unifying state religion, including the initiation of the first version of the Tripitaka Koreana.
  • Maintenance of a tributary relationship with the Song Dynasty of China, despite strained relations with the Liao Dynasty.
