Hydrodroma

Hydrodrama is a recognized genus of microscopic aquatic animals belonging to the phylum Rotifera, class Monogononta, and family Philodinidae. Members of this genus are commonly referred to as water bears or rotifers and are characterized by a ciliated corona used for locomotion and feeding, as well as a cuticle-lined mastax (jaw) adapted for grinding food particles.

They tolerate a range of water qualities, from oligotrophic (nutrient‑poor) to eutrophic (nutrient‑rich) conditions. Their presence is often documented in ecological surveys as indicators of micro‑zooplankton community structure.

Ecology

  • Feeding: Primarily filter feeders, consuming algae, bacteria, and organic detritus.
  • Reproduction: Exhibit cyclical parthenogenesis; females reproduce asexually via amictic eggs, while sexual reproduction (mictic phase) occurs under environmental stress, producing haploid males and resting (dioecious) eggs.
