Overview
Hyderabad Division is one of the seven administrative divisions of the province of Sindh, Pakistan. It serves as an intermediate tier of government between the provincial authorities and the districts within its jurisdiction.

Geography
The division occupies a region in central Sindh, extending from the Indus River floodplains in the north to the coastal lowlands near the Arabian Sea in the south. The terrain is predominantly flat, with agricultural land interspersed with riverine flood zones.
Demographics
According to the 2017 Census of Pakistan, the combined population of the districts in Hyderabad Division exceeds 8 million people. The population is linguistically diverse, with Sindhi being the predominant language, alongside Urdu, Punjabi, and smaller communities speaking Balochi and other languages.
Economy
Agriculture forms the backbone of the division’s economy, with major crops including rice, wheat, sugarcane, and cotton. The city of Hyderabad, the divisional headquarters, is a commercial hub noted for its textile industry, metalworking, and textile markets. The region also benefits from trade facilitated by the nearby Port of Karachi and the inland waterways of the Indus River.
Transportation
The division is traversed by the National Highway N-5 (the Grand Trunk Road) and the Karachi‑Hyderabad Railway Line, providing road and rail connectivity to major urban centers. Several regional airports, including Hyderabad Airport, support limited domestic flights.
Education and Health
Hyderabad Division hosts a range of educational institutions, from primary schools to higher education establishments such as the University of Sindh’s Hyderabad Campus and NED University of Engineering & Technology’s satellite facilities. Health services are delivered through a network of public hospitals, district hospitals, and private clinics, with Hyderabad General Hospital serving as the primary tertiary care center.
Administration
The division is overseen by a Divisional Commissioner, a senior civil servant appointed by the provincial government. The Commissioner coordinates inter-district matters, including law enforcement, development projects, and disaster management, and reports to the Chief Secretary of Sindh.
Historical Context
The modern administrative structure of Hyderabad Division traces its origins to the British colonial era, when the region was organized as part of the Bombay Presidency. Post‑independence, the area became part of West Pakistan, and subsequent administrative reforms in the 1960s and 1970s defined its present-day boundaries.
