Description
Hyastenus elatus is a species of brachyuran crab belonging to the family Xanthidae, commonly referred to as “mud crabs” or “xanthid crabs.” Members of the genus Hyastenus are characterized by a relatively flattened carapace, often bearing tubercles or spines, and elongated chelipeds. Specific morphological details for H. elatus are recorded in the original description (Rathbun 1906), which notes a moderately convex dorsal surface and distinct setation patterns on the walking legs. Detailed measurements and coloration patterns are not widely published in open‑access sources.
Distribution and Habitat
The species has been reported from marine environments in the Indo‑Pacific region. Records in the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) and associated taxonomic databases list occurrences in coastal waters of Southeast Asia, including the Philippines and surrounding archipelagos. H. elatus inhabits benthic zones, typically associated with coral rubble, sandy substrates, and occasionally seagrass beds at shallow to moderate depths (generally < 50 m). Precise depth range and microhabitat preferences are not comprehensively documented.
Ecology
As a member of Xanthidae, H. elatus is presumed to be omnivorous, feeding on detritus, algae, and small invertebrates. Specific dietary studies have not been published for this species. Reproductive biology, larval development, and behavior remain insufficiently detailed in the literature.
Taxonomic Notes
The species was first described by Mary J. Rathbun in 1906 under the name Hyastenus elatus. Subsequent revisions of the Xanthidae have retained the original binomial, and the name is accepted in current taxonomic registries (e.g., WoRMS, ITIS). No recognized subspecies or synonyms have been reported.
Conservation Status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has not evaluated Hyastenus elatus. There is no specific information on population trends or threats; thus, its conservation status is currently classified as “Data Deficient” by default.
