Overview
Hyalopecten is a genus of marine bivalve mollusks belonging to the family Pectinidae, commonly known as scallops. Members of the genus are characterized by delicate, thin shells that are often translucent or glass‑like in appearance—a feature reflected in the genus name (Greek hyalos “glass” + pecten “comb” or “scallop”). The shells are typically small to medium in size, rounded, and possess a well‑developed byssal groove for attachment in the larval stage. The hinge line bears a reduced number of teeth compared with many other pectinids.
Distribution and habitat
Species of Hyalopecten are primarily deep‑sea dwellers, occurring on continental slopes and abyssal plains. Recorded occurrences include the North Atlantic, the Pacific Ocean off Japan and the western United States, and various southern temperate seas. They are generally associated with soft sedimentary substrates at depths ranging from several hundred to over two thousand meters.
Biology
Like other scallops, Hyalopecten species are capable of limited swimming by rapid adduction of the shell valves, though deep‑water species are less active swimmers and tend to rely more on a sedentary lifestyle. Their diet consists of suspended phytoplankton and detritus filtered from the water column. Reproduction is gonochoristic (separate sexes), with external fertilization and a planktonic veliger larval stage that eventually settles and metamorphoses into the benthic adult.

- Hyalopecten jacksoni (E. A. Smith, 1885) – reported from deep waters of the South Atlantic.
Taxonomic revisions are ongoing, and some species formerly placed in Hyalopecten have been reassigned to other genera within Pectinidae based on molecular phylogenetic analyses.
Research and significance
Because of their deep‑sea habitats, Hyalopecten specimens are relatively rare in museum collections, limiting comprehensive ecological and physiological studies. Nonetheless, their fragile shells provide insight into the evolutionary adaptations of bivalves to low‑light, high‑pressure environments. They are occasionally encountered in deep‑sea trawling surveys and are of interest to malacologists studying biogeographic patterns among abyssal mollusks.
