Huw William Merriman (born 13 July 1973) is a British politician and former barrister who served as the Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Bexhill and Battle in East Sussex from 2015 to 2024. He held the position of Minister of State for Rail and HS2 from October 2022 to July 2024 under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and previously chaired the Transport Select Committee from January 2020 to October 2022.
Born in Brackley, Northamptonshire, Merriman studied law at Durham University and qualified as a barrister at the City Law School. He worked in financial law for 17 years, including as managing director of a team unwinding the Lehman Brothers European estate after its 2008 collapse. Before entering Parliament, he served as a local councillor on Wealden District Council.
Merriman supported the UK remaining in the EU in the 2016 referendum and voted for Theresa May's and later Boris Johnson's Brexit withdrawal agreements. He did not stand for re-election at the 2024 general election. In October 2024, he was appointed Chair of the Liverpool Manchester Railway Board, and in December 2024 he was one of three former MPs referred to the Cabinet Office for failing to correctly follow guidance on post-government employment appointments.
