Overview
Hurricane Cosme (2013) refers to a tropical cyclone that formed in the eastern Pacific Ocean during the 2013 Pacific hurricane season. Although some sources label it as a hurricane, the system attained only tropical‑storm intensity according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) best‑track data.
Meteorological History
- Formation: A tropical wave entered the eastern Pacific on 27 July 2013. By 28 July, the system had organized sufficiently to be designated a tropical depression, located roughly 290 mi (470 km) south‑southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
- Intensification: The depression was upgraded to Tropical Storm Cosme later on 28 July, attaining maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (75 km/h) and a minimum central pressure of about 1000 mb.
- Peak and Decline: Cosme maintained tropical‑storm strength for approximately 24 hours before weakening due to increased wind shear and cooler sea‑surface temperatures. It degenerated to a remnant low on 30 July 2013 and dissipated shortly thereafter.
Impact
Cosme remained well offshore throughout its lifespan and did not make landfall. Consequently, no significant impacts, damages, or fatalities were reported in Mexico, the United States, or other coastal regions. The system generated only occasional peripheral swells that were noted by maritime interests.
Season Context
Cosme was the seventh named storm of the 2013 Pacific hurricane season, a year that featured 18 total tropical cyclones, of which six became hurricanes. The storm’s short duration and limited intensity placed it among the weaker systems of the season.
Naming
The name “Cosme” is part of the rotating list of Pacific storm names used by the World Meteorological Organization. It has been assigned to several separate cyclones in different years; the 2013 occurrence was the first time the name was used in that season.
