The Hunt‑class minesweeper (1916) was a class of fleet minesweeping sloops built for the Royal Navy between 1916 and 1919, comprising two groups: the earlier Belvoir group and the later Aberdare group.
Overview
Eighty‑eight vessels were ordered in 1916–1918, of which 54 were completed. The ships served primarily as minesweepers during the First World War, with many remaining in reserve or being repurposed between the wars. At the outbreak of the Second World War, 27 of the class were re‑activated for minesweeping and escort duties, seeing action such as the Dunkirk evacuation. Five ships were lost during the conflict, and a further vessel was captured, repaired by the Germans, and later sunk in 1943.
Etymology / Origin
The class name derives from British fox‑hunting traditions. Ships of the Belvoir group were originally named after specific fox hunts, while those of the Aberdare group were initially named after coastal towns and fishing ports; all were later renamed after inland locations to avoid confusion in signaling.
