Humberto Calderón Berti (born 30 August 1932) is a Venezuelan economist and politician who has held senior positions in the Venezuelan government and the state oil sector. He is best known for serving as Minister of Energy and Mines and as Venezuela’s ambassador to the United States.
Early life and education
Calderón Berti was born in Cabimas, Zulia, Venezuela. He earned a degree in economics from the Central University of Venezuela (Universidad Central de Venezuela) and later obtained a doctorate in economic sciences from the same institution. His academic work has focused on petroleum economics and Latin American development.
Career
Government service
- Minister of Energy and Mines (1993–1994): Calderón Berti oversaw Venezuela’s energy policy during a period of significant change in the global oil market. His tenure involved negotiations with multinational oil companies and the implementation of reforms aimed at increasing state control over hydrocarbon resources.
- Ambassador to the United States (1995–1999): Appointed by President Rafael Caldera, he represented Venezuela in Washington, D.C., handling diplomatic relations, trade issues, and energy cooperation between the two countries.
