Hugh I of Arborea (1178–1211 CE), also known as Ugo I or Ugone de Bas, was the judike (judge/ruler) of the Judicate of Arborea in Sardinia from 1185 until his death in 1211, with interruptions. He was the son of Ispella (Sinispella) di Serra and Hugh I of Bas, and a grandson—through his mother—of Barisone II of Arborea.
Early Reign and Regency: Hugh ascended to the throne of Arborea in 1185 at the age of seven, under the regency of Ramon de Torroja. In 1192, a compromise was reached at Oristano whereby Peter di Serra, Barisone II's eldest son by his first wife, was recognised as co-judike.
Conflict with Cagliari: In 1195, William I of Cagliari invaded Arborea, imprisoned Peter, and besieged Oristano. Hugh was forced to sign a pact ceding territories and agreeing to marry Preziosa, William's daughter. The marriage was celebrated in 1206.
Titulature and Catalan Connections: Hugh continued to title himself "King of Sardinia" as his grandfather had done. He is often known as Ugone de Bas, "Bas" referring to the viscounty of Besalú in Catalonia. He held the title of Viscount of Bas from 1185 to 1211. When he returned to Arborea, he left Hugh III of Torroja as regent in Besalú.
Death and Succession: Hugh died in 1211 in Oristano, Sardinia, at approximately 32–33 years of age. He was succeeded by his son, Peter II of Arborea. His reign is recorded as having two periods: 1192–1195 (first reign, co-monarch with Peter I) and 1206–1211 (second reign).
