Hugh Goldie (footballer, born 1874)

Hugh Goldie (1874 – 1941) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as an outside-right (winger) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His career spanned prominent clubs in both the Scottish and English leagues, and he also earned an international cap for Scotland.

Goldie began his professional career with Leith Athletic in the Scottish League before moving south of the border to join Sunderland in the English First Division in May 1899. During his two seasons with Sunderland, he made 33 league appearances and scored 10 goals.

In May 1901, Goldie transferred to Newcastle United. He became a significant player for the Magpies, featuring in 75 league matches and scoring 12 goals before his departure in 1904. His time at Newcastle coincided with a period of growth for the club, which soon after began its most successful era.

Perhaps one of his most notable roles was becoming the first-ever captain of the newly formed Leeds City club in 1904. He led the team in their inaugural Football League season, making 58 league appearances and scoring 6 goals before leaving in 1906.

Goldie subsequently played for Clapton Orient from 1906 to 1907 and concluded his Football League career with Brentford, where he played from 1907 to 1909.

Internationally, Goldie earned one cap for Scotland. He represented his country in a British Home Championship match against England in 1902, which ended in a 2-2 draw at Ibrox.
