Hub van Doorne (1900 – 1979) was a Dutch industrialist and engineer, best known as the co‑founder of DAF (Van Doorne's Automobiel Fabriek), a prominent manufacturer of trucks, trailers, and passenger cars.
Overview
Born on 28 February 1900 in Eindhoven, Netherlands, Hub van Doorne entered the family metal‑working business after completing technical education. Together with his elder brother Anton van Doorne, he transformed the family workshop into a major automotive enterprise. In 1928 the brothers founded Van Doorne's Automobiel Fabriek (DAF), initially producing agricultural machinery and later expanding into commercial vehicles. Under Hub’s direction, DAF introduced several innovations, most notably the “Variomatic” continuously variable transmission (CVT) used in the DAF 600 introduced in 1958. The company grew to become one of the Netherlands’ leading industrial firms, eventually merging with International Harvester’s truck division to form DAF Trucks in 1975. Hub van Doorne remained active in the company’s management until his death on 24 June 1979.
