Huaping County

Definition
Huaping County (Chinese: 华坪县) is a county-level administrative division under the jurisdiction of the prefecture-level city of Lijiang, located in the northwestern part of Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China.

Overview
Huaping County occupies an area of approximately 2,560 km² in the Nanling Mountains. According to the seventh national census (2020), the county has a registered population of about 280,000 residents, comprising several ethnic groups, including Han Chinese, Yi, Lisu, and Naxi peoples. The county seat is the town of Shujing (蜀泾镇). The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, animal husbandry, mineral extraction, and tourism. Huaping is known for its terraced fields, tea production (particularly pu‑erh tea), and natural attractions such as Weishan Lake and the surrounding karst landscape.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Huaping” is derived from the Chinese characters 华 (huá), meaning “splendid” or “magnificent,” and 坪 (píng), meaning “plain” or “flat land.” Historically, the term referred to the relatively level terrain found amid the otherwise mountainous region, which was considered a fertile and auspicious area for settlement. Accurate historical records pinpointing the exact moment of naming are not publicly documented; however, the nomenclature reflects the traditional Chinese practice of using descriptive geographic terms for place names.

Characteristics

  • Geography: The county is situated at elevations ranging from 1,200 m to over 3,000 m above sea level, resulting in a varied topography of valleys, plateaus, and peaks. The region experiences a subtropical highland climate, with average annual temperatures between 12 °C and 18 °C and precipitation concentrated in the summer months.

  • Administrative divisions: Huaping County is divided into 3 towns (Shujing, Qianxi, and Mianhu) and 9 townships (including Dongshan, Yongle, and Xiaojie). Each division administers local villages and hamlets.

The county also possesses mineral resources, notably copper, lead, and zinc, which are extracted under provincial regulation. Small‑scale tourism has expanded in recent years, leveraging the county’s cultural heritage and natural scenery.

Yi and Lisu communities maintain distinctive marriage customs, textile patterns, and folk dances, while Naxi cultural influence is evident in local architecture and the Dongba script.
