Horrie Jones (born Henry Herbert Jones; 17 October 1888 – 20 March 1963) was a prominent Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Known for his versatility and leadership, he was a key figure in Fitzroy's successful era during the 1910s.
Early Life and Career Born in North Fitzroy, Victoria, Jones began his football career locally before joining the Fitzroy Football Club.
VFL Career Jones made his VFL debut for Fitzroy in 1909 and quickly established himself as a valuable player. Throughout his career, he demonstrated exceptional versatility, playing effectively in various positions including half-back, centre, and forward. His strong marking, precise kicking, and consistent performance made him an integral part of the team.
He played a total of 176 VFL games for Fitzroy, kicking 117 goals. Jones was a member of three Fitzroy premiership-winning teams: 1913, 1916, and 1917. He captained the club in 1916 and 1917, leading them to back-to-back premierships during a challenging period impacted by World War I. His leadership during these years was particularly noteworthy, as many players were away on military service.
Jones retired from VFL football at the end of the 1920 season.
