Honmachi is an administrative district located in the northernmost part of Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, Japan. It is a predominantly residential and commercial area that borders the wards of Shinjuku to the east and Nakano to the north and west. The district is divided into six numbered sub-districts, categorized as Honmachi 1-chome through Honmachi 6-chome.
Geography and Administration Honmachi occupies a geographic position where the plateau of the Yodobashi area transitions toward the Kanda River. It is bordered by Nishi-Shinjuku (Shinjuku Ward) to the east, Yayoi and Minami-dai (Nakano Ward) to the north and west, and the Shibuya districts of Hatsudai and Sasazuka to the south. Landmarks and Infrastructure The district is home to several notable cultural and educational institutions. Honmachi 1-chome contains the New National Theatre, Tokyo, which is Japan’s primary national center for the performing arts, including opera, ballet, and contemporary dance. While the Tokyo Opera City Tower is technically situated in the adjacent Nishi-Shinjuku district, it sits immediately on the border of Honmachi and is closely associated with the area's skyline and economic activity.
The Kanto International Senior High School is located within Honmachi, contributing to the district's character as an educational hub. The area also features the Honmachi Library and several local parks.
Transportation While no railway stations are located directly in the center of the district, Honmachi is served by Hatsudai Station on the Keio New Line, located on its southern border with the Hatsudai district. Nishi-shinjuku-gochome Station on the Toei Oedo Line also provides access to the eastern portions of the district. Major thoroughfares serving the area include Yamate-dori (Tokyo Metropolitan Route 317) and the Koshu Kaido (National Route 20).
Demographics and Character Honmachi is characterized by high-density urban housing, ranging from traditional low-rise apartments to modern condominium complexes. Its proximity to the Shinjuku central business district makes it a significant residential area for commuters. The neighborhood maintains a mix of quiet residential streets and small-scale commercial corridors.
