Honduran passport

A Honduran passport is a travel document issued to citizens of Honduras for international travel. It is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Honduras through its Passport Office (Dirección General de Asuntos Consulares) within Honduras, and by Honduran consulates located abroad. The passport serves as proof of Honduran citizenship and identity, facilitating international travel and requesting assistance from Honduran diplomatic missions overseas.

Types of Passports Honduras issues several categories of passports:

  • Ordinary Passport (Pasaporte Ordinario): This is the most common type, issued to general citizens for personal and recreational international travel.
  • Official Passport (Pasaporte Oficial): Issued to government officials, civil servants, and representatives of the Honduran government traveling for official purposes.
  • Diplomatic Passport (Pasaporte Diplomático): Issued to diplomats, high-ranking government officials, and their eligible dependents for diplomatic missions and international representation.

Physical Characteristics Modern Honduran passports are biometric passports (e-passports) and adhere to the specifications recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), particularly Document 9303.

  • Cover: The passport typically features a dark blue cover.
  • Front Cover Design: The Coat of Arms of Honduras is centrally emblazoned on the front cover. Above the emblem, the words "REPÚBLICA DE HONDURAS" (Republic of Honduras) are inscribed, and below it, the word "PASAPORTE" (Passport) appears. For biometric passports, the standard international e-passport symbol (a small rectangle with a circle in the middle) is located at the bottom of the cover.
  • Data Page: The inside front cover or the first data page contains the personal information of the passport holder, including:
    • Type (P for Passport)
    • Country Code (HND)
    • Passport Number
    • Surname
    • Given Names
    • Nationality (HONDUREÑA)
    • Date of Birth
    • Place of Birth
    • Sex
    • Date of Issue
    • Date of Expiry
    • Issuing Authority
    • Digital photograph of the holder
    • Holder's Signature
    • A Machine-Readable Zone (MRZ) at the bottom for automated data entry.
  • Security Features: To deter forgery and counterfeiting, Honduran passports incorporate various security elements such as watermarks, holograms, UV reactive inks, microprinting, and complex security patterns. The embedded electronic chip in e-passports stores the holder's biographical data and digital photograph, often with cryptographic keys to ensure authenticity.

Validity An ordinary Honduran passport is typically valid for five to ten years from its date of issue, depending on the regulations at the time of issuance and the applicant's age.

Visa Requirements The visa requirements for Honduran citizens traveling abroad vary depending on the destination country. As per global passport index rankings (such as the Henley Passport Index), Honduran citizens generally enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to a significant number of countries and territories worldwide. This allows for considerable international mobility for short stays without the need for prior visa applications. However, specific requirements can change, and travelers are always advised to confirm the latest entry regulations of their destination.
