Honam Expressway

The Honam Expressway (Korean: 호남고속도로, Honam Gosokdoro) is a major controlled-access highway in South Korea that forms part of the national expressway network. Designated as Expressway No. 25, it runs primarily in a north‑south direction through the Honam region, linking the southwestern provinces of Jeollanam-do and Jeollabuk-do.

Route and Length

  • Southern Terminus: Suncheon, Jeollanam-do (connected to the Namhae Expressway)
  • Northern Terminus: Nonsan, Chungcheongnam-do (intersecting with the Gyeongbu Expressway)
  • Total Length: Approximately 167 kilometres (104 miles)

The expressway traverses a series of major cities and counties, including Gwangju, Naju, and Iksan, providing a principal transportation corridor for passenger and freight traffic within the Honam region.

Historical Development

  • Planning and Construction: Initiated in the early 1970s as part of South Korea’s broader expressway expansion program aimed at improving connectivity between the capital region and the southwestern provinces.
  • Opening: The initial segment between Suncheon and Naju opened to traffic in 1977. Subsequent sections were completed in phases, with the entire route being fully operational by 1991.
  • Upgrades: Since its completion, the Honam Expressway has undergone periodic widening, resurfacing, and safety enhancements, including the addition of auxiliary lanes, improved signage, and the installation of electronic toll collection systems.

Economic and Strategic Significance
The Honam Expressway is integral to the movement of goods and people within the southwestern corridor of South Korea. It facilitates access to major industrial complexes, agricultural markets, and ports such as the Port of Gwangyang. The highway also supports regional tourism by providing efficient travel to cultural and natural attractions in the Honam area.

Management and Operations
The expressway is managed by the Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC), a state‑owned enterprise responsible for the construction, maintenance, and operation of the nation’s expressway system. Toll collection is conducted through a combination of manual booths and electronic toll collection (Hi‑Pass) devices.

Related Infrastructure

  • Honam Expressway Branch (Expressway No. 251): Connects the main Honam Expressway to the city of Mokpo.
  • Honam Line (Railway): A parallel railway line operated by Korail, serving similar north‑south traffic demands.
