Homebase

Homebase is a term with multiple established uses. In general English, the phrase home base (also written homebase) denotes a base of operations, a headquarters, or the place where a person or thing normally lives or operates. In baseball, it is a synonym for home plate. The word also serves as the name of several notable commercial, literary, and cultural entities outlined below.

Etymology and general meaning

The term is a compound of home and base. Dictionaries such as Merriam-Webster define home base as "the place in which someone or something lives or operates." Cambridge and Collins dictionaries note additional senses, including a headquarters or a place of comfort and safety, as well as the baseball sense of home plate. The closed-up form homebase likewise carries these general meanings in common usage.
