Common names
No widely recognized common name; occasionally referred to as “Tweedie’s hillstream loach” in informal contexts.
Description
Homalopteroides tweediei is a small, elongated loach adapted to fast‑flowing, well‑oxygenated streams. Like other members of its genus, it possesses a flattened ventral surface and enlarged pectoral and pelvic fins that enable it to cling to rocks in swift currents. Reported total lengths for adult specimens range up to approximately 10 cm (4 in), though precise maximum size varies among populations.
Distribution and habitat
The species is known from the river systems of mainland Southeast Asia, particularly in the Mekong and Salween drainages spanning Myanmar, Thailand, and northern Laos. It inhabits clear, rapid streams with rocky substrates, often at moderate to high elevations. The fish is benthic, seeking shelter among stones and gravel.
Ecology and behavior
H. tweediei grazes on periphyton, biofilm, and small invertebrates attached to submerged surfaces. Its morphological adaptations—such as a reduced swim bladder and a suction‑type mouth—facilitate maintenance in turbulent water. Reproductive habits are not well documented, but, as with related hillstream loaches, spawning is presumed to occur in the same habitats where eggs are laid on submerged rocks.
Conservation status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has not evaluated Homalopteroides tweediei; consequently, its conservation status is listed as “Not Evaluated.” Localized threats may include habitat alteration from dam construction, sedimentation, and water pollution, but specific population trends are insufficiently known.
Etymology
The specific epithet tweediei honors an individual bearing the surname Tweedie, likely a collector or naturalist who provided specimens to the describer. The original description by Francis Day (1878) does not elaborate further on the namesake.
