Holsnøy

Holsnøy is an island located in Alver Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. Situated north of the city of Bergen, it covers an area of approximately 89 square kilometers (34 square miles), making it the largest island in the municipality.

The island's geography is characterized by a rugged coastal landscape, numerous small lakes, and hilly terrain. Its highest point is the mountain Eldsfjellet, which reaches an elevation of 324 meters (1,063 feet) above sea level. Holsnøy is surrounded by several fjords, including the Salhusfjorden to the south and the Radfjorden to the north and east.

The primary population center on Holsnøy is the village of Frekhaug, located on the southeastern tip of the island. Other significant settlements include Rossland, Io, and Hamre. Historically, the island constituted the majority of the former Meland Municipality before it was merged into the newly formed Alver Municipality on January 1, 2020.

Transportation infrastructure connects Holsnøy to the mainland and surrounding islands via a series of bridges. The Krossnessund Bridge connects Holsnøy to the neighboring island of Flatøy, which in turn provides access to the mainland near Bergen via the Nordhordland Bridge. These connections have facilitated the island's development as a residential area for individuals commuting to the Bergen metropolitan region.

Economically, Holsnøy has traditional roots in agriculture and fishing. In contemporary times, the local economy is diversified, though many residents are employed in the service and industrial sectors of the surrounding region.
