Etymology

The name "Hladké Životice" is derived from two Czech components:

  • Hladké: This is the plural form of the adjective "hladký," meaning "smooth" or "flat." This likely refers to the flat or gently rolling landscape of the area where the village is situated.
  • Životice: This is a common Slavic toponymic suffix, often found in place names across the Czech Republic and other Slavic countries. It is typically derived either from a personal name (such as Života) or from the word "život" (life), suggesting a place associated with life, vitality, or a settlement founded by someone with that name.

Therefore, the name "Hladké Životice" can be roughly translated as "Flat Životice" or "Smooth Životice," indicating a settlement named Životice located on flat terrain.
