Hippia (moth)

Definition
Hippia is a genus of moths in the family Notodontidae, subfamily Nystaleinae, first described by the entomologist Heinrich Benno Möschler in 1878.

Overview
The genus belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the superfamily Noctuoidea. Species assigned to Hippia are part of the diverse Notodontid moth fauna, which are primarily nocturnal and known for their often cryptic wing patterns. Current taxonomic listings recognize two valid species within the genus:

  • Hippia mumetes (Cramer, 1775)
  • Hippia vittipalpis (Walker, [1858])

Several species formerly placed in Hippia have been re‑assigned to the genus Elasmia, including Hippia insularis (now Elasmia insularis), Hippia mandela (now Elasmia mandela), and Hippia packardii (now Elasmia packardii).

Etymology / Origin
The name Hippia was introduced by Möschler in 1878. The original publication does not provide an explicit explanation of the etymology. The term may derive from the Greek word “hippos” (horse) or could be a classical reference, but this remains unconfirmed.

Characteristics
Detailed morphological descriptions specific to Hippia species are scarce in readily accessible literature. As members of Notodontidae, Hippia moths are presumed to exhibit the family’s typical features:

  • Medium‑sized, stout-bodied adults with forewings that often display muted browns, grays, or greens, providing camouflage against bark or leaves.
  • Hindwings usually lighter in coloration and may be hidden when at rest.
  • Caterpillars (larvae) of Notodontids commonly possess distinctive humps or dorsal protuberances; however, larval characteristics for Hippia species are not well documented.

The lack of comprehensive species‑level data means that precise diagnostic traits for the genus are not fully established in the public record.
