Geography and Hydrology
- Location: The Hintersteiner See is situated at an elevation of approximately 883 meters (2,897 feet) above sea level, nestled on the south side of the majestic Wilder Kaiser mountain massif. It falls within the administrative district of Kufstein.
- Dimensions: The lake covers an area of about 56 hectares (138 acres) and has a maximum depth of approximately 36 meters (118 feet). Its length is roughly 1.3 kilometers (0.8 miles) and its width is about 500 meters (0.3 miles).
- Water Quality: Fed by underground springs, the lake boasts excellent water quality, often reaching drinking water standards. Its crystal-clear waters allow visibility to considerable depths and contribute to its characteristic turquoise-green hue.
- Surroundings: The lake is surrounded by dense forests and meadows, with the towering, rugged peaks of the Wilder Kaiser serving as a dramatic backdrop, particularly the peaks of Scheffauer and Zettenkaiser.

The Hintersteiner See is believed to have been formed thousands of years ago through a massive landslide from the surrounding mountains, which blocked a valley and created the natural basin that now holds the lake. - Fauna: The lake is home to several species of fish, including trout and char, making it a popular spot for recreational fishing (with proper permits). Birdlife typical of mountain lake environments can also be observed.
Tourism and Recreation
The Hintersteiner See is a significant tourist attraction, particularly during the summer months.- Swimming: Due to its high water quality and pleasant summer temperatures, the lake is popular for swimming and bathing. There is a designated lido (beach area) on the northern shore.
- Hiking: A scenic hiking trail encircles the entire lake, offering spectacular views from various vantage points. The trail is relatively easy and suitable for families. Numerous other hiking routes in the Wilder Kaiser region are accessible from the lake.
- Boating: Rowboats are available for rent, allowing visitors to explore the lake's calm waters. Motorized boats are generally prohibited to maintain tranquility and water quality.
- Fishing: Anglers can enjoy fishing for local species, though permits are required and regulations must be followed.
- Gastronomy: Several traditional inns and restaurants are situated around the lake, offering local Tyrolean cuisine and refreshments with panoramic views.
Access to the lake is typically via a toll road from Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser, though it is also reachable by bus or on foot.
