Early Life and Education
Hinko Urbach was born on February 18, 1878, in Zagreb, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He pursued his medical studies at the University of Vienna, a renowned center for medical education at the time, and graduated in 1903.
Career and Contributions
After completing his studies, Urbach returned to Zagreb and began his medical career. He spent a significant portion of his professional life at the Sestre Milosrdnice Hospital (then known as the State Hospital) in Zagreb. There, he rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the head of the Internal Medicine Department.
Urbach's most significant contribution was his pioneering work in endocrinology. He established the first dedicated endocrine laboratory in Croatia at the Sestre Milosrdnice Hospital, laying the groundwork for the scientific study and clinical treatment of endocrine disorders in the region. His research and clinical practice focused extensively on:
- Thyroid diseases: He made significant advancements in understanding and treating conditions related to the thyroid gland.
- Diabetes mellitus: Urbach contributed to the diagnosis and management of diabetes, a prevalent metabolic disorder.
- Other endocrine disorders: His work encompassed a broad spectrum of hormonal imbalances.
In 1922, Urbach was appointed a professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Zagreb, where he educated generations of Croatian physicians and further disseminated knowledge in internal medicine and endocrinology. He authored numerous scientific papers, contributing to both national and international medical literature.
Academia and Recognition
Hinko Urbach's scientific contributions and academic standing were recognized through his election as a member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU), known at the time as the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts (JAZU). His dedication to medicine and his role in establishing endocrinology as a specialized field in Croatia left a lasting legacy.
Death
Hinko Urbach passed away on July 17, 1968, in Zagreb, at the age of 90.
