Himsagar Express

The Himsagar Express is a weekly superfast express train service operated by Indian Railways, connecting Kanyakumari in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu with Jammu Tawi in the northern union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It is notable for being one of the longest-running train services in India, covering a vast distance across the length of the country.

Etymology The name "Himsagar" is derived from two Sanskrit words: "Him" (हिम), meaning "snow" or "Himalayas," and "Sagar" (सागर), meaning "ocean." The name symbolizes the train's journey from the southern tip of India, bordered by the Indian Ocean, to the northern regions near the Himalayas (represented by Jammu).

Route and Operations The Himsagar Express traverses approximately 3,787 kilometers (2,353 miles) over a journey lasting around 70 to 72 hours, depending on the direction. It passes through multiple states and union territories, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir.

  • Train No. 16317: Kanyakumari to Jammu Tawi
  • Train No. 16318: Jammu Tawi to Kanyakumari

It provides connectivity to various major cities and towns along its extensive route, making it an important link for inter-state travel and tourism.
