Hillcrest Centre

The Hillcrest Centre is a major multi-purpose community centre located in the Riley Park–Little Mountain neighbourhood of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It serves as a significant recreational and social hub for the city and holds historical importance as a venue during the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Overview

Opened in 2010, the Hillcrest Centre was developed as a legacy project of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. It replaced the former Percy Norman Pool and Oakridge Transit Centre. The facility features a wide range of amenities designed to serve diverse community needs, from aquatic sports to library services and general fitness.

Facilities

The Hillcrest Centre comprises several key components:

  • Vancouver Aquatic Centre (Hillcrest Aquatic Centre): A state-of-the-art aquatic facility including a 50-meter competition pool, a leisure pool with a lazy river and water slide, a hot tub, steam room, and sauna.
  • Hillcrest Community Centre: Offers a gymnasium, fitness centre, dance studio, multi-purpose rooms, and various recreational programs.
  • Vancouver Public Library – Riley Park Branch: A modern branch of the public library system, providing access to books, media, and community services.
  • Hillcrest Park Ice Rink: An indoor ice arena for public skating, hockey, and figure skating.
  • Curling Centre: A dedicated facility for the sport of curling.
  • Outdoor Spaces: Includes green spaces, a children's playground, and public art installations.

2010 Winter Olympics Role

During the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, the Hillcrest Centre site was temporarily known as the Vancouver Olympic/Paralympic Centre. It hosted the curling events for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. A temporary ice facility was constructed on the site for the duration of the Games, which was later converted into the permanent curling centre and community ice rink as part of the broader Hillcrest Centre complex.

Architecture and Sustainability

Designed with sustainability in mind, the Hillcrest Centre achieved LEED Gold certification. Its design incorporates various environmentally friendly features, including a green roof, efficient water usage systems, and the use of natural light and ventilation. The architecture aims to integrate the large facility into the surrounding parkland and residential area.

Community Impact

Since its opening, the Hillcrest Centre has become a cornerstone of the Vancouver community, providing accessible recreational, educational, and social opportunities for residents of all ages. Its comprehensive facilities and programming contribute significantly to the health and well-being of the city.
