Temporal range
Hildoceras bifrons is reported from strata of the Early Jurassic, specifically the Toarcian stage (approximately 182–174 Ma).
Geographic distribution
Fossils of H. bifrons have been documented in marine sedimentary deposits of north‑western Europe, notably in the Paris Basin (France), southern England, and parts of the Germanic Basin. Specimens are often recovered from limestone and marl sequences that represent epicontinental seas of the Early Jurassic.
Morphological description
The shell of H. bifrons is planispirally coiled and moderately involute, with the outer whorl covering a substantial portion of the preceding whorls. Key diagnostic features include:
- Whorl section: Compressed to moderately rounded, with a slightly higher than wide profile.
- Ribbing: Primary ribs arise near the umbilical edge and frequently bifurcate (hence the specific epithet “bifrons”) before reaching the outer flank. Secondary riblets may intercalate between the primary ribs.
- Venter: Typically keeled or narrowly acute, common in hildoceratid ammonites.
- Suture pattern: Complex ammonitic sutures with deep lobes and saddles, consistent with other members of the family Hildoceratidae.
Paleoecology
As a nektonic cephalopod, H. bifrons inhabited open marine environments. Its morphological adaptations—streamlined shell and well‑developed keel—suggest a relatively active swimming lifestyle, enabling it to occupy mid‑water to near‑surface ecological niches.
Historical and taxonomic notes
The species was originally described in the 19th century based on specimens from the Paris Basin. Subsequent revisions of Early Jurassic ammonite faunas have retained H. bifrons within Hildoceras, although some authors have noted its close affinity to related genera such as Harpoceras and Eodactylites. The taxonomic placement is supported by comparative studies of rib patterns and suture morphology.
Significance in biostratigraphy
Because H. bifrons is confined to a relatively narrow interval of the Toarcian and displays a distinct ribbing pattern, it serves as a useful index fossil for correlating Toarcian strata across western Europe. Its occurrence assists in refining regional chronostratigraphic frameworks and in reconstructing paleogeographic distributions of Early Jurassic marine basins.
