Description
Hieracium umbellatum is a perennial herbaceous plant forming a basal rosette of lanceolate to linear leaves, typically 2–6 cm long, often bearing soft hairs. From the rosette arise one to several erect, branched stems reaching 10–30 cm in height. The inflorescences are composed of multiple small capitula arranged in a loose, somewhat umbel‑like cluster. Each capitulum contains only ligulate (ray) florets that are bright yellow; disc florets are absent. The flowering period generally extends from June through September. The achenes are ribbed, topped with a pappus of fine hairs facilitating wind dispersal.
Habitat and Distribution
- Geographic range: Native to temperate Europe, with documented occurrences in the British Isles, France, Germany, the Iberian Peninsula, the Balkans, Scandinavia, and the Carpathian region. Isolated records exist from introduced populations in North America, primarily in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada.
- Ecology: Prefers open, sunny sites such as calcareous grasslands, meadows, roadside verges, and light woodlands. It tolerates a range of soil types but is most commonly found on well‑drained, moderately fertile soils. The species is often associated with other low‑growth forbs in semi‑natural habitats.
Conservation status
- The species is not listed as threatened on a global scale and is generally assessed as “Least Concern” in its native range. Localized declines may occur where intensive agricultural practices or habitat conversion reduce suitable grassland areas.
Taxonomic notes
The delimitation between Hieracium and Pilosella has been subject to ongoing systematic debate. Many contemporary floras and taxonomic databases (e.g., Plants of the World Online, Euro+Med PlantBase) treat Hieracium umbellatum under the genus Pilosella as Pilosella umbellata. Nevertheless, the name Hieracium umbellatum remains valid in the sense of original Linnaean publication and is widely used in European botanical literature.
