Description
Hexalectris arizonica is a leafless, terrestrial orchid that relies on a mycoheterotrophic lifestyle, obtaining nutrients through symbiotic relationships with soil fungi rather than photosynthesis. The plant typically produces an erect, brownish‑green to reddish stem ranging from 10 to 30 cm in height. Inflorescences are terminal racemes bearing 5–15 small, cream‑to‑pale‑yellow flowers. Each flower has a three‑lobed lip (labellum) that may display subtle brownish markings. The lack of chlorophyll gives the plant a muted coloration, and the stems are often described as “crested” due to the presence of fine, hair‑like projections along the flowering axis.

Distribution and habitat
Hexalectris arizonica is native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Documented occurrences include:

  • Arizona (predominantly the Mogollon Rim and surrounding mountain ranges)
  • New Mexico (particularly in the southern highlands)
  • Texas (limited records in the Trans‑Pecos region)
  • Northern Mexico (southern portions of Sonora and Chihuahua)

The species inhabits oak‑pine woodlands, mixed coniferous forests, and montane scrub at elevations of approximately 1,500–2,500 m (5,000–8,200 ft). It prefers well‑drained, calcareous or mildly acidic soils and is often found under a canopy of Pinus spp. and Quercus spp., where suitable mycorrhizal fungal partners are present.

Ecology
As a mycoheterotroph, H. arizonica forms obligate associations with ectomycorrhizal fungi, most frequently members of the genera Rhizopogon and Tomentella. These fungal partners connect the orchid to the surrounding forest carbon network, enabling the plant to obtain carbohydrates indirectly from photosynthetic trees. Flowering typically occurs in late spring to early summer (May–June), and pollination is presumed to be mediated by small insects such as bees or flies, though detailed pollinator observations are limited.

Conservation status
The species is considered uncommon throughout its range. Conservation assessments have assigned it a NatureServe global rank of G3 (vulnerable), reflecting a moderate risk of extinction due to its specialized habitat requirements and susceptibility to habitat disturbance. Primary threats include:

  • Deforestation and land‑use change (e.g., development, logging)
  • Alterations in fire regimes that affect the composition of oak‑pine ecosystems
  • Over‑collection, though this is less common compared with more conspicuous orchids
