Heterodera zeae

Heterodera zeae is a species of plant-parasitic nematode in the family Heteroderidae, commonly known as the corn cyst nematode. It is an obligate sedentary endoparasite that infects the roots of host plants, primarily maize (Zea mays), from which its specific epithet is derived.

It was first described by Koshy, Swarup, and Sethi in 1971 based on populations found in India.

Morphology

  • Cysts (dead females): Lemon-shaped to spheroidal, typically white to brown when mature. The cyst wall (cuticle) exhibits a characteristic zig-zag or wavy pattern on the dorsal surface. The vulval cone is prominent, typically with a circumfenestrate pattern (a fenestra surrounding the vulval slit) and bullae (rounded structures) underlying the fenestra. The anus is located near the edge of the fenestra.
  • Second-stage juveniles (J2): Vermiform, approximately 400–500 µm in length. Key diagnostic features include a strong, well-developed stylet (approx. 22–25 µm), distinct knobs, a hemispherical head region with 3–4 annules, and a laterally pointed tail terminus with a hyaline region comprising roughly 40–55% of the tail length.
  • Males: Vermiform, rare in populations, with a strong stylet and spicules measuring approx. 30–35 µm.

Distribution

Heterodera zeae has been reported in:

  • India (type locality; widespread in maize-growing states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh).
  • Pakistan
  • Nepal
  • Egypt
  • United States (First detected in Virginia in 1981; subsequently found in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky. It is subject to domestic quarantine regulations).

Host Range

The primary economic host is maize (corn), Zea mays. Other confirmed hosts include:

  • Sorghum bicolor (Sorghum)
  • Pennisetum glaucum (Pearl millet)
  • Various grasses (Poaceae family), such as Echinochloa crus-galli (Barnyard grass), Setaria spp. (Foxtail), and Digitaria spp. (Crabgrass).

Legumes and broadleaf weeds are generally non-hosts.

Life Cycle

The life cycle follows the typical pattern for cyst nematodes (approx. 3–6 weeks depending on temperature):

  1. Egg: Contained within the cyst (dead female body); can remain viable for several years in the absence of a host.
  2. J1 (First-stage juvenile): Develops and molts inside the egg.
  3. J2 (Second-stage juvenile): The infective stage. Hatches from the egg in response to host root exudates (hatching factors). Penetrates root tips, migrates intracellularly to the vascular cylinder, and establishes a feeding site (syncytium).
  4. J3 & J4: Swollen, sedentary stages feeding on the syncytium.
  5. Adult: Sexual dimorphism occurs. Males revert to vermiform shape and leave the root to mate. Females become lemon-shaped, rupture the root cortex (remaining attached at the posterior), and produce an egg mass (gelatinous matrix) externally while filling their body cavity with eggs. Upon death, the female cuticle hardens and turns brown, forming the protective cyst.

Economic Importance

H. zeae is a significant pest of maize in the Indian subcontinent, capable of causing yield losses estimated between 10% and 40%, depending on initial population density, cultivar susceptibility, and environmental conditions. Symptoms include stunting, chlorosis (yellowing), wilting, and reduced ear size, often appearing in patches within a field ("cyst patches").

In the United States, its distribution is currently limited, and it is classified as a regulatory pest to prevent spread to major Corn Belt states.

Management

  • Crop Rotation: Rotation with non-host crops (e.g., soybean, wheat, rice, mustard, potato) is the primary control method. A 2–3 year rotation is generally recommended to reduce population densities below damage thresholds.
  • Resistant Varieties: Screening for resistance in maize germplasm is ongoing; some tolerant lines have been identified, but commercially deployed high-resistance hybrids are limited compared to those for H. glycines (soybean cyst nematode).
  • Soil Solarization: Effective in reducing viable cyst populations in top soil layers in hot climates.
  • Chemical Control: Nematicides (e.g., carbofuran, aldicarb - usage restricted in many jurisdictions) can provide economic control in high-value seed production but are rarely cost-effective for commercial grain maize.
  • Sanitation: Cleaning machinery to prevent movement of cyst-infested soil between fields.

Quarantine Status

Heterodera zeae is listed as a quarantine pest by several National Plant Protection Organizations (NPPOs) and Regional Plant Protection Organizations (RPPOs), including EPPO (European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization) A2 List, due to the risk of establishment in maize-growing regions where it is not yet present.
