The Herzsee (German for "Heart Lake") is a small, picturesque alpine lake located in the Austrian state of Tyrol. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,854 meters (6,083 ft) above sea level, it is nestled within the Tux Alps, a mountain range of the Central Eastern Alps.
Geography and Location
Herzsee is located above the village of Tulfes in the Innsbruck-Land district of Tyrol. It lies on the western flank of the Glungezer mountain, a prominent peak in the Tux Alps. The lake's distinctive name derives from its roughly heart-shaped outline, which is particularly noticeable from higher vantage points. It serves as a source for the Prockenbach, a small mountain stream that flows down into the Inn Valley.Geology and Ecology
The lake is a product of glacial activity, typical of the alpine landscape of Tyrol, having formed in a cirque carved out by ancient glaciers. Its waters are clear and cold, characteristic of high-altitude lakes. The surrounding area features alpine meadows and coniferous forests, which are home to diverse alpine flora and fauna. Common plant species include various types of gentian, alpine rose (Rhododendron ferrugineum), and other alpine flowers. Wildlife such as ibex, chamois, and marmots can sometimes be spotted in the wider Glungezer region.Tourism and Recreation
Herzsee is a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts, especially during the summer months due to its accessibility and scenic beauty.- Access: The lake is relatively easy to reach. Visitors can take the Glungezerbahn cable car from Tulfes up to the middle or top station. From the top station, the lake is typically a short and gentle walk, making it suitable for families.
- Hiking: Herzsee serves as a focal point for several hiking trails, ranging from easy strolls around the lake to more challenging routes that connect to the Glungezer summit (2,677 m or 8,783 ft) or other alpine huts such as the Glungezerhütte.
- Scenery: Visitors are drawn to the lake for its tranquil atmosphere, the clear waters that reflect the surrounding mountains and sky, and panoramic views of the Inn Valley and the Nordkette mountain range to the north.
- Winter: In winter, the area around Herzsee is part of the Glungezer ski resort. While the lake itself might be frozen and covered in snow, the surrounding slopes are utilized for skiing and snowboarding.
