Hero of Belarus

The Hero of Belarus (Belarusian: Герой Беларусі) is the highest honorary title awarded by the Republic of Belarus. It is conferred by the President of Belarus to individuals who have performed heroic deeds or displayed exceptional merit in service to the state, society, or national defense.

Establishment
The title was instituted by Presidential Decree No. 50 on 13 March 1995, shortly after Belarus gained independence following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. It succeeded the Soviet-era title Hero of the Soviet Union for Belarusian citizens.

Eligibility and Criteria
The award may be presented to both citizens of Belarus and foreign nationals. Eligibility criteria include, but are not limited to:

  • Extraordinary courage and heroism in combat or during the protection of the state.
  • Outstanding achievements in the fields of science, technology, culture, or public service that have significantly advanced the interests of Belarus.
  • Exceptional contributions to the development of the national economy, defense, or international prestige.

Insignia
Recipients receive a gold star medal, commonly referred to as the Gold Star of the Hero of Belarus. The medal features a five‑pointed star with rays, typically worn on the left side of the chest above other orders and decorations. Along with the star, a certificate detailing the reasons for the award is issued.

Notable Recipients
A number of individuals have been honored with the title since its creation, including military personnel, astronauts, scientists, and cultural figures. Specific names and citations are recorded in official presidential decrees; however, comprehensive publicly available lists are limited.
