Herbie Evans

Herbert Price Evans (30 August 1894 – 19 November 1982) was a Welsh professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He made 93 league appearances for Cardiff City between 1920 and 1926, scoring one goal, and later played for Tranmere Rovers. Evans earned six caps for the Wales national team between 1922 and 1924.

Early life and education
Herbie Evans was born in Llandaff, Cardiff, Wales. Details of his early education and youth football are not widely documented.

Club career

  • Cardiff Corinthians – Prior to joining the professional ranks, Evans played for the amateur side Cardiff Corinthians.
  • Cardiff City (1920–1926) – Signed by Cardiff City in 1920 while the club was entering the English Football League. He remained an amateur for much of his early spell, winning a Wales amateur cap in 1922. He made his senior international debut later that year. Evans turned professional during his tenure but suffered a broken leg that sidelined him for nearly two years. Upon his return, he lost his regular place to Harry Wake and transferred to Tranmere Rovers in 1926.
  • Tranmere Rovers (1926–1927) – His time at Tranmere was cut short after he broke his other leg, which forced his retirement from professional football.

International career
Evans represented Wales at both amateur and senior levels. He earned six full international caps between 1922 and 1924, debuting on 4 February 1922 in a 2–1 victory over Scotland. He did not score for the national team.

Cricket
In addition to football, Evans was an accomplished cricketer. He played a single first‑class match for Glamorgan in 1922.

Later life and death
After retiring from sport, Evans lived in Wales. He died on 19 November 1982 in Llandough, Penarth, Wales, at the age of 88.
