Herbert Carpenter

Herbert Carpenter (14 June 1869 – 11 November 1932) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Somerset County Cricket Club between 1896 and 1906. Primarily a right-handed middle-order batsman, he also occasionally bowled right-arm medium-fast deliveries.

Early Life and Career Born in Bristol, Carpenter made his first-class debut for Somerset in the 1896 season. He quickly established himself as a reliable batsman, known for his steady temperament and ability to compile substantial innings. Over his career, he appeared in 149 first-class matches.

Playing Style and Statistics Carpenter was a consistent performer for Somerset. He scored 6,052 runs in his first-class career at an average of 24.30. His highest score was 128, one of his four first-class centuries. While primarily a batsman, he also took 107 wickets at an average of 34.00, with best innings figures of 5/38. He often contributed with the ball, particularly in his earlier years, providing a useful change of pace.

Later Career and Death After his cricketing career, Carpenter remained connected with the sport. He died in his hometown of Bristol on 11 November 1932, at the age of 63. His contributions were a notable part of Somerset's team during the transitional period of county cricket in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
