Heorhiy Zhylin

Heorhiy Zhylin (Ukrainian: Георгій Жилін; also transliterated as Georgy Zhylin or Heorhiy Zhilin; born August 18, 1925, in Kyiv, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union; died September 12, 1997) was a Ukrainian rower who competed for the Soviet Union. He was a prominent athlete in sweep rowing during the 1950s, most notably an Olympic medalist.

Career

Zhylin's international rowing career saw him achieve significant success, primarily representing the Soviet Union at the Olympic Games and European Championships.

Olympic Games

Heorhiy Zhylin participated in two Summer Olympic Games, securing medals at both:

  • 1952 Helsinki Olympics: He won a bronze medal in the men's coxed pairs event. His partners in the boat were Ihor Emchuk and coxswain Volodymyr Petrov.
  • 1956 Melbourne Olympics: At his second Olympic appearance, Zhylin earned a silver medal in the men's coxless fours. He rowed alongside Mykhailo Bryzhin, Ihor Emchuk, and Yevhen Samoylov.

European Championships

In addition to his Olympic achievements, Zhylin also medaled at the European Rowing Championships:

  • 1953 European Rowing Championships: He won a gold medal in the coxed pairs event.

Later Life

After concluding his competitive career, Zhylin's later life details are not as widely documented. He passed away in 1997 at the age of 72.
