Henry Mazur

Henry Mazur (March 15, 1928 – April 21, 2011) was an American politician who served as the 35th Mayor of Jersey City, New Jersey, from 1981 to 1985. A member of the Democratic Party, Mazur's political career also included a term on the Jersey City Council.

Early Life and Education

Henry Mazur was born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey, on March 15, 1928. He pursued a career in education before entering politics, working as a teacher and later as a school administrator within the Jersey City public school system.

Political Career

City Councilman

Mazur began his political career by serving on the Jersey City Council, representing Ward C from 1977 to 1981. During his time on the council, he became known for his attention to local issues and his efforts to promote fiscal responsibility.

Mayor of Jersey City

In 1981, Henry Mazur successfully ran for Mayor of Jersey City, defeating incumbent Mayor Thomas F. X. Smith. He took office amidst a challenging period for the city, characterized by significant financial difficulties and urban blight.

During his single term as mayor (1981-1985), Mazur focused primarily on stabilizing the city's finances. His administration implemented austerity measures and sought to improve the city's credit rating, which had suffered from previous fiscal mismanagement. He also championed efforts to attract economic development and revitalization projects to the city.

Mazur ran for re-election in 1985 but was defeated by Anthony Cucci.

Later Life and Death

After his mayoral term, Henry Mazur largely retired from public life. He passed away on April 21, 2011, at the age of 83.
