Henry Knight (bishop)

Henry Knight (29 November 1904 – 30 May 1989) was an Indian Anglican bishop who served as the first Bishop of Madhya Pradesh in the Church of South India. He played a significant role in the early development of the unified church in the region.

Early Life and Education Born in India, Henry Knight received his early education locally before pursuing theological studies. He attended St. John's College, Agra, and later Bishop's College, Calcutta, where he prepared for ordination within the Anglican Church.

Ecclesiastical Career Knight was ordained as a deacon in 1929 and as a priest in 1930. He served in various capacities within the Anglican Church in India during the decades leading up to the formation of the Church of South India. His ministry often involved missionary work and pastoral duties in different parts of the country.

With the formation of the Church of South India in 1947—a union of Anglican, Methodist, Congregational, and Presbyterian churches—Knight became a part of this new ecclesiastical body. His leadership qualities and experience were recognized, leading to his elevation to the episcopate.

Bishop of Madhya Pradesh In 1957, Henry Knight was consecrated as the first Bishop of the newly formed Diocese of Madhya Pradesh within the Church of South India. His episcopate coincided with the challenging but crucial period of integrating diverse denominational traditions into a cohesive church structure. As bishop, he was responsible for overseeing the spiritual welfare, administration, and mission of the church across a large and geographically varied region. He retired from his episcopal duties in 1969.

Later Life Following his retirement, Bishop Knight continued to be involved in Christian life and community until his death on 30 May 1989.
