Description
Hemyda vittata is a species of tachinid fly. Adults are medium‑sized (approximately 8–12 mm in length) with a robust body typical of the family Tachinidae. The species exhibits a characteristic longitudinal striped pattern (hence the specific epithet “vittata”, meaning “banded” or “striped”) on the dorsal thorax and abdomen, although the exact coloration and pattern may vary among individuals. The antennae are aristate, and the wings are clear with a well‑developed venation pattern characteristic of Exoristinae.

Distribution
Verified records place H. vittata in the Palearctic region, including:

  • Central and northern Europe (e.g., Germany, United Kingdom, Sweden)
  • Extending eastward into parts of western Russia

Biology and Ecology

  • Life cycle: Like other tachinid flies, H. vittata is a parasitoid. Females lay eggs on or near host insects; the emerging larvae penetrate the host and develop internally, eventually killing the host.
  • Known hosts: Documented host records are limited, but members of the genus are generally parasitoids of Lepidoptera (caterpillars) and occasionally other holometabolous insects. Specific host species for H. vittata have not been definitively recorded in the primary literature.
  • Habitat: Adults are commonly found in temperate woodlands, meadows, and hedgerows where host insects are present. They are active from late spring through early autumn.

Taxonomic Notes
The species was originally described as Tachina vittata by Johann Wilhelm Meigen in 1824. It was later transferred to the genus Hemyda based on morphological characters of the adult fly, particularly the structure of the facial suture and bristle arrangement, which align with the diagnostic features of Hemyda.

Conservation Status
There are no specific assessments for H. vittata on the IUCN Red List. The species does not appear to be of particular conservation concern and is generally regarded as a regular, though not abundant, component of the European tachinid fauna.
