The Helsby War Memorial is a Grade II listed war memorial located in the village of Helsby, Cheshire, England. Erected to commemorate the local service personnel who lost their lives in the First World War, it was later updated to include those who died in the Second World War.
Location and Setting
The memorial stands prominently at the junction of Chester Road (A56) and Station Road in Helsby, a significant intersection within the village. Its central location ensures it remains a focal point for remembrance and community gatherings.
Design and Construction
The Helsby War Memorial was designed by Walter Fogg and the sculptural work was carried out by T.J. Williams. It was unveiled on 26 March 1922.
The memorial takes the form of a tall, tapering Latin cross crafted from granite. This cross surmounts a substantial square plinth, which in turn rests upon a two-stepped base. The overall design is typical of many war memorials erected in the interwar period, combining traditional religious symbolism with a dignified and solemn aesthetic.
Inscriptions and Commemorations
The primary inscriptions on the plinth commemorate the individuals from Helsby who made the ultimate sacrifice during global conflicts. Originally, it listed the names of 36 men from the parish who died in the First World War (1914–1918). Following the Second World War, an additional inscription was added to commemorate 17 local men who perished during that conflict (1939–1945).
The main dedicatory inscription typically reads something to the effect of:
- "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN EVER LOVING MEMORY OF THE MEN OF HELSBY WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918"
- (followed by the names)
- "AND IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945"
- (followed by additional names)
Significance
The Helsby War Memorial serves as a poignant and enduring tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of the local community's service members. It is a tangible link to Helsby's past, reminding current and future generations of the human cost of war. As a Grade II listed building, it is recognized for its special architectural and historical interest, ensuring its preservation for cultural and historical appreciation. It continues to be the site of annual Remembrance Day services and other commemorative events, fostering a sense of community remembrance and respect.
