Helianthus salicifolius is a species of flowering plant in the family Asteraceae, commonly known as the willowleaf sunflower. It is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the south-central United States, where it occurs primarily in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana, and extends into northern Mexico.
Taxonomy
- Kingdom: Plantae
- Clade: Angiosperms
- Clade: Eudicots
- Order: Asterales
- Family: Asteraceae
- Genus: Helianthus
- Species: H. salicifolius
Morphological description
Helianthus salicifolius typically reaches heights of 1.5–2.5 m (5–8 ft). The plant is characterized by its narrow, linear‑lanceolate leaves that resemble those of willow (Salix spp.), a feature reflected in its specific epithet “salicifolius”. Leaves are generally 5–15 cm long, with a smooth margin and a pubescent underside. The inflorescences are solitary flower heads borne on sturdy peduncles. Each head comprises 12–20 yellow ray florets surrounding a central disc of numerous tubular disc florets, which mature to produce one-seeded cypselae (commonly called achenes).
Habitat and ecology
The species inhabits open prairies, savannas, limestone outcrops, and disturbed sites such as roadsides and fields. It prefers well‑drained, sandy to loamy soils and is tolerant of moderate drought conditions. H. salicifolius flowers from midsummer through early autumn, providing nectar and pollen for a variety of insects, including native bees and butterflies.
Distribution
Native range: United States (Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana) and northeastern Mexico (Coahuila, Nuevo León). The plant is not widely cultivated and is primarily encountered in its natural habitats.
Conservation status
The species has not been evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). At the state level, it is generally considered secure, though local populations may be impacted by habitat loss due to agricultural expansion and urban development.
Uses
There are no significant commercial uses recorded for Helianthus salicifolius. It may be employed in native‑plant landscaping and prairie restoration projects because of its adaptability to dry, open conditions and its contribution to pollinator support.
