Heiko Vogel (born 28 June 1975) is a German professional football manager and former player. Known primarily for his coaching career, he has managed several clubs and held significant roles in youth development for prominent German teams.
Early Life and Playing Career Vogel played as a midfielder during his active career, primarily for amateur clubs in Germany. His playing days were not at the professional level, leading him to transition into coaching relatively early.
Coaching Career
Bayern Munich (Youth Coach) Vogel began his coaching career in the youth academy of FC Bayern Munich, where he worked for several years, gaining experience in developing young talent and understanding the operational structure of a top-tier club.
FC Basel In 2009, Vogel moved to Switzerland, joining FC Basel as an assistant coach under Thorsten Fink. Following Fink's departure to Hamburger SV in October 2011, Vogel was appointed as the head coach. Under his leadership, Basel achieved notable success during the 2011–12 season, winning both the Swiss Super League and the Swiss Cup. Perhaps his most famous achievement during this period was guiding Basel through the UEFA Champions League group stage, famously eliminating Manchester United before being knocked out by Bayern Munich in the round of 16. He was dismissed from his role in October 2012.
Later Managerial Roles After his tenure at Basel, Vogel took on various coaching and managerial positions:
- Sturm Graz: He managed the Austrian club SK Sturm Graz from September 2017 to June 2018.
- KFC Uerdingen: He had a brief spell as manager of German third-tier side KFC Uerdingen in 2019.
Youth Development and Assistant Roles Vogel has also held significant roles in youth development and as an assistant coach:
- Borussia Mönchengladbach: He served as the Head of Youth Development at Borussia Mönchengladbach from 2020 to 2021.
- VfB Stuttgart: He joined VfB Stuttgart as a youth coach, specifically for their U19 team, and also served as an interim manager for one DFB-Pokal match in October 2022.
Return to Bayern Munich In October 2023, Heiko Vogel returned to FC Bayern Munich to take on the role of Head of Youth Development, overseeing the club's academy and youth teams.
