His Olympic results included a 38th-place finish in the 300-metre free rifle three positions event at the 1908 Games, a 28th-place finish in the 50-metre pistol at the 1912 Games, and a 20th-place finish in the 50-metre rifle prone event at the 1924 Games. He also competed in team free rifle events, achieving 5th place in both 1912 and 1924.

At the national level, Huttunen won five Finnish national championship gold medals in shooting: in free rifle standing (1909, 1924), free rifle three positions (1910, 1913), and free pistol (1919). He competed in the ISSF World Shooting Championships, placing 5th in the free rifle team event in 1914 and 7th in free rifle standing in 1924. He represented the club Suomen Metsästysyhdistys and was present at the constitutive meeting of the Finnish Shooting Sport Federation, later becoming a board member.

In addition to shooting, Huttunen was an accomplished cross-country skier. He competed in the 1901 and 1905 Nordic Games, placing 6th and 7th respectively in the 30-kilometre event. He was part of the team that won the first cross-country skiing relay race in Finland, held from Helsinki to Porvoo in 1904. He received the Silver Medal of Merit with the Golden Cross of the Finnish Sport in 1947.
