Hedevig Catharina Quiding (November 17, 1815 – February 20, 1891) was a Swedish noblewoman. She is primarily remembered as the daughter of the celebrated landscape painter Olof Quiding, the wife of the prominent county governor and chamberlain Carl Gustaf Åkerhielm af Margretelund, and the mother of Sweden's Prime Minister Carl Gustaf Åkerhielm and the acclaimed author Anna Åkerhielm. Her life connects significant artistic, political, and literary lineages in 19th-century Sweden.
Biography
Hedevig Catharina Quiding was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on November 17, 1815. Her father, Olof Quiding (1782–1865), was a distinguished landscape painter whose works captured the natural beauty of Sweden. Her mother was Christina Maria Montén (1787–1875). Growing up in a culturally active household, Hedevig was exposed to artistic and intellectual circles from an early age.
On June 12, 1836, Hedevig Quiding married Baron Carl Gustaf Åkerhielm af Margretelund (1805–1867) at Löfstaholm in Uppland. Carl Gustaf Åkerhielm was a notable public servant who held various high-ranking positions, including kammarherre (chamberlain) to the royal court and later landshövding (county governor) in several counties, such as Västerbotten and Skaraborg. Their marriage integrated Hedevig into the influential noble family of Åkerhielm af Margretelund, further solidifying her connections within Swedish high society.
Hedevig Quiding passed away on February 20, 1891, at Sturefors Castle in Östergötland, the ancestral home of the Åkerhielm family.
