Headquarters Joint Operations Command (HQJOC) is the Australian Defence Force (ADF) command responsible for planning, controlling, and conducting ADF joint and combined operations. It is the highest-level operational command within the ADF.
HQJOC is responsible for the full spectrum of military operations, from humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to high-intensity combat operations. It exercises operational control over all deployed ADF forces, both within Australia and overseas. This includes land, maritime, and air forces.
The command is based at a purpose-built facility at Bungendore, New South Wales, near Canberra. The Commander Joint Operations (CJOPS) is the senior officer in command and is typically a three-star officer (Vice Admiral, Lieutenant General, or Air Marshal). CJOPS reports directly to the Chief of the Defence Force (CDF).
HQJOC's functions include:
- Planning and directing joint military operations.
- Coordinating ADF support to civilian authorities.
- Maintaining situational awareness and providing timely advice to the CDF and the government.
- Developing and maintaining joint operational doctrine and training.
- Liaising with other government agencies and international partners.
HQJOC plays a crucial role in ensuring the ADF's readiness to respond to a wide range of threats and challenges, both domestically and internationally. It is a key component of Australia's national security architecture.
