Hattie Jacques (16 May 1922 – 23 October 1980) was an English actress and comedian, best known for her work in film, television, and theatre, particularly in comedic roles. She gained prominence as a member of the comedy ensemble associated with the Carry On film series, appearing in fourteen of the films, often portraying authoritative or matronly characters such as the formidable prison governor Miss Haggard in Carry On Screaming! (1966) and the innkeeper Mrs. Fanny Larkin in Carry On Nurse (1959).
Early life and education
Jacques was born in London to a middle‑class family. She attended St. Mary's School in Vauxhall and later pursued acting training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating in 1942.
Career
- Stage: Jacques made her professional stage debut in 1942, performing in wartime revues and repertory theatre. She became a regular at the Royal Court Theatre and appeared in productions such as The Dandy (1945) and The Man Who Came to Dinner (1947).
- Film: Beyond the Carry On series, Jacques appeared in notable films including Passport to Pimlico (1949), The Belles of St. Trinian's (1954), and The Naked Truth (1957). She was recognized for her timing and ability to balance character depth with comedic effect.
- Television: Jacques co‑created and starred in the BBC sitcom Sykes and a… (1960–1965) alongside Eric Sykes, portraying the character of Harriet Sykes. She also featured in the television series Theatre Parade and had guest appearances in a range of dramas and comedies throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
Personal life
Jacques married actor John Le Mesurier in 1949; the marriage ended in divorce in 1965. She married Canadian actor and writer John W. B. “Jack” Brown in 1967, remaining with him until her death. Jacques was known for her charitable work, particularly with the Actors' Charitable Trust.
Legacy
Hattie Jacques is remembered as one of the leading female comic actors of mid‑20th‑century Britain. Her performances have been cited as influencing later generations of British comedians. In 2008, the British Film Institute included her in its list of “100 Stars of Film and Television.”
