Hathni Kund is a concrete barrage located on the Yamuna River in the Yamunanagar district of Haryana, India. Situated near Tajewala village, it was constructed to replace the older Tajewala Headworks and became fully operational in 1999.
The primary purpose of the Hathni Kund Barrage is to regulate the flow of the Yamuna River and divert its waters for various uses. It serves as a crucial point for distributing water into two major canal systems: the Western Yamuna Canal (serving Haryana and Delhi) and the Eastern Yamuna Canal (serving Uttar Pradesh).
Beyond irrigation, the barrage plays a significant role in flood control, especially during the monsoon season, by managing the river's flow and mitigating the risk of inundation in downstream areas, including the National Capital Region of Delhi. It also acts as an important source of drinking water for Delhi. Its strategic location and operational efficiency are vital for the water management infrastructure of the northern Indian states reliant on the Yamuna River.
