The Hatfield Neolithic trackway is a prehistoric wooden causeway dating to the early Neolithic period (approximately 6,000 – 5,500 cal BP) that was discovered in the River Lea floodplain near the modern town of Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England. The trackway consists of a series of timber planks and supporting postholes set in the wet, silty substrate of the ancient river channel, forming a raised walkway that would have allowed foot traffic across marshy terrain.
Discovery and investigation
The remains were first identified during routine archaeological monitoring associated with a large‑scale construction project in 2021. Subsequent excavations were undertaken by a team from the University of Cambridge’s Department of Archaeology, in partnership with local heritage authorities. Radiocarbon dating of oak timbers recovered from the structure produced calibrated dates centering around 5,800 cal BP, placing the trackway among the earliest known Neolithic engineered wooden paths in southern Britain.
Construction and materials
The trackway was built from locally sourced oak (Quercus robur) planks, each roughly 2 m long, 0.2 m wide and 0.05 m thick. The timbers were split longitudinally, split‑face up, and then laid end‑to‑end on a foundation of vertically set oak posts driven into the waterlogged ground. The posts were spaced at intervals of approximately 0.5 m, providing a stable platform above the soft sediment. No evidence of metal fittings or cordage was found, suggesting that the builders relied on the inherent strength of the timber and the buoyancy of the wet environment.
Context and significance
The Hatfield trackway adds to a growing corpus of early Neolithic timber structures in the United Kingdom, such as the Balbridie trackway (Scotland) and the Sweet Track (Somerset, England). These constructions indicate an emerging capacity for large‑scale environmental manipulation and suggest that Neolithic groups in eastern England were capable of coordinated communal labor to facilitate movement across difficult wetland landscapes. The location near the River Lea would have provided a strategic route linking settlements on either side of the floodplain, facilitating exchange of goods, ideas, and social interaction.
Preservation
Because the timbers were deposited in an anoxic, water‑logged context, they survived in a relatively excellent condition, preserving cellular detail that allows dendrochronological analysis. Conservation measures included keeping the timbers in a controlled environment with constant humidity and temperature to prevent desiccation and cracking.
