Harry Stratford

Harry Stratford (born c. 1944) is a British entrepreneur and businessman widely recognized for his significant contributions to the pharmaceutical industry. He is best known as the founder of Shire Pharmaceuticals plc and Nemaura Pharma, companies that have focused on drug development, specialty pharmaceuticals, and innovative drug delivery systems.

Early Life and Education Stratford graduated from Nottingham University with a degree in Pharmacy. He later pursued a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the London Business School, which complemented his scientific background with strategic business acumen.

Career

  • Early Career: Stratford began his career in the pharmaceutical sector, gaining valuable experience in various roles within major companies such as Boots and GlaxoSmithKline.
  • Shire Pharmaceuticals: In 1986, Stratford co-founded Shire Pharmaceuticals plc, an enterprise focused on developing and marketing specialty pharmaceutical products. Under his leadership as CEO, Shire experienced rapid growth, initially specializing in calcium supplements for osteoporosis and later expanding into key therapeutic areas such as ADHD, gastrointestinal disorders, and rare diseases. He served as CEO until 1994 and remained on the board of directors until 2004. Shire grew to become a major global biopharmaceutical company before its acquisition by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company in 2019.
  • Nemaura Pharma: Following his successful tenure at Shire, Stratford founded Nemaura Pharma in 2005. As Chairman and CEO, he has guided the company's focus on developing proprietary transdermal drug delivery systems. Nemaura Pharma aims to improve drug efficacy, reduce side effects, and enhance patient convenience through its innovative patch technologies. A notable product under development includes a continuous glucose monitoring patch for diabetes management.

He has also been awarded an honorary Doctor of Science (DSc) degree from Loughborough University in 2011, acknowledging his entrepreneurial achievements and significant contributions to science and technology.
