Harold Amos (June 7, 1918 – May 7, 2003) was an American microbiologist, geneticist, and academic administrator. He is noted for his pioneering work in bacterial genetics, his role in advancing scientific education for underrepresented groups, and his long tenure as a professor at Harvard Medical School.
Early life and education
- Born in Pennsauken, New Jersey, United States.
- Earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in 1940.
- Received a Ph.D. in genetics from the University of Chicago in 1949, where his dissertation focused on the genetics of Escherichia coli.
Academic and research career
- Joined the faculty of the Department of Bacteriology at the University of Michigan in 1949, later moving to Harvard Medical School in 1955 as the Louis B. Supersky Professor of Molecular Biology.
- Conducted foundational research on bacterial nitrogen fixation and the genetic regulation of metabolism, contributing to the understanding of microbial genetics and enzymology.
- Served as director of the Harvard–MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST) from 1974 to 1982, overseeing interdisciplinary graduate education programs.

- Co‑founder of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and an early advocate for increased participation of minorities in science and engineering fields.
