Definition
Hari Kostov (Macedonian: Хари Костов; born 13 November 1959) is a Macedonian economist and politician who served as the 5th Prime Minister of the Republic of Macedonia from June to November 2004.
Overview
Born in Pišica, then part of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia within Yugoslavia, Kostov graduated with honors from the Faculty of Economics at Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje (1983). He began his career as an economic adviser to the Macedonian government and later worked for the World Bank (1995‑1996). Returning to Macedonia, he held senior positions at Komercijalna Banka Skopje, serving as General Manager (1996‑2002) before entering politics.
Kostov was appointed Vice‑Minister of Finance (1994‑1995) and later served as Minister of Internal Affairs (2002‑2004) in the cabinet of Prime Minister Branko Crvenkovski. On 31 May 2004, the Macedonian Parliament elected him Prime Minister, a role he held until his resignation on 15 November 2004 amid coalition disputes, particularly between ethnic Macedonian and ethnic Albanian ministers. He formally left office on 18 November 2004 and was succeeded by Defence Minister Vlado Bučkovski. After his premiership, Kostov returned to the banking sector as chief executive of Komercijalna Banka Skopje.
Kostov is of Aromanian descent, an ethnic minority in the Balkans, and has been recognized with the Order of the Holy Macedonian Cross (2008).
Etymology/Origin
The given name “Hari” is a Macedonian form that may be derived from the Greek “Haralambos” or from the Slavic diminutive of “Haralampios”; the surname “Kostov” is a patronymic meaning “son of Kosta” (a diminutive of Konstantin).
